Credit Cards With Loyalty or Reward Schemes
Many credit cards have additional perks for consumers who have had the card for a long time. Typically, many cards offer points that can be used on purchases of airline tickets or purchases made with partner businesses. These cards are becoming much more popular, and in fact, many people consider the card rewards as important as the interest rates when getting a new credit card.
One downfall of these cards is that many people will spend more than they normally would just to get the reward. Opponents of these cards say that they encourage consumers to make smaller purchases with their cards even though they could easily purchase them with other means. They say that these cards encourage people to get into credit card debt. Small debts can add up to more than a consumer can pay off in one month, and rack up interest for the credit card company.
Another downfall of credit cards with loyalty schemes is that merchants who are part of the loyalty program will get access to the consumer’s spending habits they would not normally have access to, simply because they are now part of the credit card program. Merchants also exchange information about consumers amongst themselves. Consumers must decide if this potential loss of privacy is worth getting the rewards offered by the card.
Loyalty credit cards are not for everyone, but, if you are able to pay off all of your debt each month before you accumulate interest, then they may very well be a good deal. Be sure to contact your credit card provider before you sign any paperwork, and be sure to contact them with questions after you get you get a card.
