Travel Insurance | make sure your covered

Recent events have demonstrated the need for adequate travel insurance cover to make sure that all is not lost when the unexpected happens.

As with any insurance, it is easy to buy the cheapest rather than the best but good travel insurance doesn't have to be expensive. Most important of all is that you make sure that your chosen travel insurance policy provides adequate medical cover. Repatriation from, or extended health treatment in, some countries can be very expensive.

If you are an EU resident and register for the European Health Insurance Card before you depart, you can obtain the same level of healthcare as a local resident in any member country. However, this is no substitute for either the financial coverage provided under a travel insurance policy or a dedicated telephone help line.

Secondly, make sure that your travel insurance policy covers other essential extras such as cancellation or curtailment, abandonment due to excessive delays and personal liability cover. Not all policies will cover the airline ceasing to exist so make sure that flights or package holidays are bought using a credit card. That way at least you will get your money back (for flights costing more than £100).

Most tour operators offer a policy with their holiday on a single trip basis. However, it can pay you to shop around either on the internet or through an insurance broker. Also, if you plan on having more than one holiday a year, it may be worthwhile taking out an annual multi trip policy. Make sure that winter sports cover is included if you go skiing.
