Interest rates, highest in six years
The Banks Interest rates are now higher than they have been in six years, following this week's increase of 0.25 per cent.

Some Internet banks have today put their savings account interest rates up to equal or exceed the base rate. Top rates found available from the banks and financial services providers is around 6.35 per cent, depending on the amount of savings.

The Bank of England this week raised the base rate of interest to 5.75 per cent. Great news for those with savings, but for those with already hard to manage debts, this could spell trouble for many householders and people with large debts.

Those people with borrowings on fixed rates that are nearing the end of the fixed interest rate period could see an unwelcome increase in monthly repayments.

Record amounts being spent on Credit Cards
New reports claim that British consumers are spending record amounts of money using both credit and debit cards.

And over the last ten years the amount of money spent using debit and credit cards has more than trebled, according to a study by UK payments association Apacs.

The study showed that more than £320 billion in plastic was spent on plastic in the during 2006, debit cards are apparently more popular than credit cards, probably due to the higher interest rates and debit cards take the funds form your bank account where as Credit Cards is borrowing, over 61% of the total amount spent on plastic was from debit cards.

Does this mean cash is a thing of the past? In 2005 card spending was higher than cash spent, with cash being around 45 billion lower than card spending.

More details can be found here Apacs, UK Payment Association including a break down on the spending, between cash, plastic cards, cheques and other methods

UK interest rates rise again. The Bank of England has raised the interest three times in the last five months. The raise in interest rates adds a significant amount to monthly payments on mortgages and many already struggling consumers will find it even harder, it is no wonder that the number of repossessions are on the up. Typically those with money and savings are onto a winner, increased interest on savings and bank accounts, easy for those without mounting debts and struggling to make ends meet.
