Caring for Your Desktop PC

Top Tips for Prolonging the Life of Your PC

Modern personal computers are designed to be fast and efficient, and to offer smooth, uninterrupted, service, but that does not mean that personal computer care should be neglected.

Overheating - whether it be caused by operating a desktop computer in an excessively hot environment, or by inadequate ventilation, or by inadequate cooling systems, or a combination of these factors - is the main contributor towards poor performance and component failure. The CPU, or "Central Processing Unit", in a modern Intel, or AMD, personal computer runs faster - and therefore hotter - than ever before, so it may be that a CPU cooling fan, in combination with an aluminium heatsink, is necessary for prolonged, optimal performance.

On a slightly more mundane note, personal computer (PC) care should also include regular cleaning. Fan casings, ports, etc. can be kept clean and dust-free by blowing compressed air, or gas, from a can into them, and optical drives - CD, DVD drives, etc. - often benefit from proper cleaning with alcohol based cleaning fluid, on a monthly basis. Regular cleaning means that a personal computer is not only hygienic, from your point of view, but also cooler, and therefore less prone to failure.

Personal computer care should also extend to the software that your computer runs. System performance tools, for example, can indicate performance "bottlenecks", which may, in turn, require hardware components to be upgraded. Furthermore, do not underestimate the importance of efficient antivirus software to your personal computer; viruses, worms and Trojan horses are a clear and present danger to all personal computer users, so make sure that you update virus definition files daily, and scan for viruses at least weekly.
